Backed by a brand-new entry-level model, Skoda has posted one of its strongest monthly performances in recent years. Meanwhile, Volkswagen continues to struggle in India due to the absence of a sub-4 metre offering — a segment that benefits from lower GST and dominates overall market volumes.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The newly launched Kylaq, Volkswagen Group’s first modern sub-4m model for India, is proving to be a breakthrough product. In October 2025, Skoda recorded 8,252 units, a massive 102% year-on-year growth, more than doubling its volumes from 4,079 units in October 2024.
The Kylaq alone accounted for a majority of this surge, delivering Skoda’s highest monthly growth among all OEMs last month.
On the premium end, Skoda also delivered 305 units of the Kodiaq, assembled from CKD kits. This marks a 46% growth compared to 209 units sold in October 2024 when the first-generation model was still on sale.
The newly reintroduced Octavia RS arrived as a CBU and contributed two units — expectedly low due to its niche positioning.

Kylaq Dominates Skoda’s Sales — 62% Contribution Alone
With 5,078 units, the Kylaq has become biggest success story in years, contributing 62% of total sales.
This single model has radically changed Skoda’s market presence and could push Volkswagen to reconsider its stance on the sub-4 metre category. VW had earlier exited this segment after the Ameo failed to find traction.
Given the Kylaq’s overwhelming demand, it may now be the perfect time for Volkswagen to re-enter the segment with a refreshed, localized product using the same MQB-A0 platform.

Slavia & Kushaq: Tepid Performance in October 2025
Slavia
The Slavia remained second-highest seller, but numbers stayed lukewarm at 1,648 units — just 1% growth compared to 1,637 units in October 2024.
Despite being a well-rounded sedan, it continues to face pressure from the SUV wave and rising competition in the mid-size sedan segment.
Skoda Kushaq
The Kushaq faced a steep decline, selling 1,219 units, down 45% YOY from 2,213 units.
This marks one of the SUV’s weakest months, likely influenced by:
- Cannibalization by the newer Kylaq
- Intensifying competition from updated Creta, Seltos, Taigun, and others
- Lack of major updates since launch
It will need a facelift or powertrain refresh soon to revive Kushaq demand.
Imports: Kodiaq Strong, Octavia RS
The Kodiaq delivered 305 units, up 46% year-on-year. Strong demand continues in the premium 7-seater SUV segment despite limited supply.
The Octavia RS, imported as a CBU, saw two units, in line with expectations for a performance-oriented, high-end model.
The Superb, which was discontinued earlier, recorded zero units versus 20 last year.
Why Volkswagen Struggles
Skoda’s surge highlights the importance of an affordable entry model. The Kylaq benefits from:
- GST advantage of the sub-4m category
- Aggressive pricing
- High localisation
- SUV styling and wide mass-market appeal
Volkswagen, in contrast, has no sub-4m product, leaving it unable to compete in the largest volume segment in the country.
VW’s lineup — Taigun, Virtus, Tiguan — sits entirely above the 4m mark, restricting its potential. As Skoda pulls ahead, VW may need an urgent course correction to regain traction.

Conclusion
Skoda’s October 2025 performance marks a major milestone, led by the runaway success of the Kylaq. The brand has doubled its sales year-on-year and strengthened its presence across multiple segments. Meanwhile, Volkswagen’s absence from the sub-4 metre space is proving costly.
The Kylaq reshaping the brand’s fortunes, Volkswagen may soon be under pressure to introduce its own entry-level SUV. The coming months could redefine the VW Group’s overall strategy for India.
