The 2027 KTM 790 Duke has been unveiled in international markets and the bike has received a comprehensive set of updates. Middleweight naked bike enthusiasts have a massive reason to celebrate. While many expected the older 790 platform to quietly fade away into retirement following the arrival of the larger 890 and 990 Duke models, the Austrian manufacturer has completely rewritten the script. KTM has officially unveiled the heavily updated 2027 KTM 790 Duke in international markets.
Dubbed “The Scalpel,” this latest iteration represents the most comprehensive design and mechanical overhaul the model has seen since its return to production. It trades its older, polarizing looks for a menacing new street presence, drops weight, and introduces significant hardware upgrades directly addressing long-term owner feedback.
Design
The most immediate talking point is the naked bike’s radical styling makeover. The front fascia sheds the old split-headlight design, completely adopting the aggressive, alien-like look seen on the flagship KTM 1390 Super Duke R and the 990 Duke.
- The Face: It features a striking, fang-shaped LED headlight cluster with floating daytime running lights (DRLs) that frame a central projector beam. An integrated ambient light sensor automatically handles day-to-night visibility transitions.
- The Silhouette: The bodywork feels noticeably larger and more grown-up. The new 13.5-litre steel fuel tank gets a flatter top section and deeply sculpted side extensions, offering riders vastly superior knee contact and stability when hooking into corners.
- The Rear End: The tail section is cleaner and sharply swept upward, neatly consolidating the taillight and turn indicators into a single, minimalist unit. Underneath, a redesigned stainless-steel exhaust canister with a larger silencer finishes off the rear profile.
Despite its visually wider and more imposing stance, KTM’s engineering team managed to put the naked bike on a strict diet. The updated 790 Duke tips the scales at 185 kg (kerb weight), making it a crucial 2 kg lighter than the outgoing model.
While the core Chromium-Molybdenum steel trellis frame remains unchanged, it is now mated to a brand-new, exposed aluminum subframe finished in a stark, powder-coated black. Minor geometry revisions have also been made to the cast aluminum open-lattice swingarm to maximize chassis feedback and high-speed directional stability.

Adjustable WP Apex & In-House Braking
Suspension hardware receives a major, highly requested promotion. The front end features a 43 mm WP Apex open-cartridge USD fork offering 150 mm of travel, now equipped with highly intuitive 5-click manual dials on the fork caps to adjust compression and rebound settings on the fly. The rear handles bumps via a gas-assisted WP Apex Monotube shock offering 170 mm of wheel travel, adjustable for both preload and rebound damping.
The real structural curveball, however, is the braking setup. Breaking away from third-party suppliers, the 790 Duke is one of KTM’s first premium large-capacity models to debut a complete, in-house developed WP Braking System. The hardware consists of:
- Dual 300 mm front discs clamped by radially mounted 4-piston calipers.
- A premium WP radial master cylinder operating the front lever.
- A single 240 mm rear disc with a single-piston caliper.
KTM claims this unified WP layout delivers an exceptionally linear braking response with minimal lever effort, eliminating the harsh initial bite that often unsettled the chassis on older generations. The 17-inch alloy wheels come wrapped from the factory in super-sticky Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV tires.
Specs
Mechanically, the heart of the machine is the legendary and proven 799 cc LC8c parallel-twin engine, which is fully Euro 5+ emissions compliant.
| Performance Metric | Output Details |
| Peak Power | 105 hp (105 PS) @ 9,500 rpm |
| Peak Torque | 87 Nm @ 8,000 rpm |
| Gearbox Configuration | 6-Speed Manual with Slipper Clutch |
(Note: Selected global markets will also receive a restricted 95 hp version to comply with A2 licensing regulations.)
KTM has paid close attention to real-world comfort by modifying the rider’s triangle. The footpegs have been slightly repositioned, the seat cushioning gets a flatter profile for easier weight shifting, and a new tapered aluminum handlebar features a wider, more open angle. This allows riders to easily tune their posture from a casual urban commute to a deeply committed, front-heavy track stance.

The Death of “Demo Mode”
The tech suite is anchored by a new 5-inch bonded-glass color TFT dashboard that uses clear infographics to illustrate settings, requiring far fewer clicks to navigate. The rider aids are extensive, packaging multiple customizable ride modes, lean-sensitive Cornering ABS, multi-stage Traction Control, Anti-Wheelie mitigation, and Launch Control.
More importantly, KTM has listened directly to global consumer outrage and officially begun the phased withdrawal of its controversial “Demo Mode”—a software practice that previously locked factory electronic features behind a digital paywall after the first 1,500 km of ownership.
To completely bury past consumer anxieties regarding the early parallel-twin reliability issues, KTM is backing the international model with a premium 4-year manufacturer’s warranty as standard layout.
Motor Mitra Verdict
The 2027 KTM 790 Duke is an incredibly smart strategic strike. Instead of forcing riders to take the expensive step up to the 990 series, KTM has successfully modernized the 790 to stand tall against fierce middleweight rivals like the Triumph Street Triple 765, Yamaha MT-09, and Kawasaki Z900.
The motorcycle will arrive across international showrooms starting end of July 2026. While KTM India has not officially confirmed its reinstatement to Indian dealerships just yet, the brand’s premium push across the country leaves a massive window of hope for the ultimate return of the original Scalpel.
