New BMW F 450 GS Launched in Malaysia: Replaces G 310 GS

The global lightweight adventure motorcycle space is undergoing a massive structural shift, and India is sitting right at the epicenter of it. BMW Motorrad has officially expanded the footprint of its highly anticipated entry-level adventure touring machine by introducing the BMW F 450 GS into the Malaysian market.

Manufactured exclusively by TVS Motor Company at its state-of-the-art Hosur production facility in Tamil Nadu, the F 450 GS steps in as the direct, highly advanced replacement for the aging, single-cylinder G 310 GS platform across multiple international markets. Interestingly, BMW Motorrad Malaysia has decided to skip baseline variants entirely, introducing the motorcycle solely in its top-tier, rally-inspired GS Trophy specification at an official on-the-road price of RM 39,900 (approximately ₹9.14 Lakh).

Engine

The most defining technical leap over the outgoing 310 series lies nestled within the chassis. The F 450 GS is propelled by a completely clean-sheet, newly developed 420cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine.

To satisfy the demanding performance requirements of European A2 licensing guidelines and global overlanders, the motor generates a highly versatile 48 hp of peak power at 8,750 rpm and 43 Nm of torque at 6,750 rpm. What truly sets this engine apart from generic parallel-twins is its structural configuration. It utilizes an innovative 135-degree crankshaft offset that creates an uneven firing sequence. This mechanical architecture delivers a deeply characterful, throaty exhaust note that mimics a high-performance V-twin while optimizing low-end tractability to crawl out of sticky off-road ruts. Power is channelled via a 6-speed manual gearbox that comes loaded from the factory with BMW’s innovative Easy Ride Clutch (ERC) and Shift Assistant Pro, allowing seamless, clutchless upshifts and downshifts while automatically retaining full engine braking parameters during low-speed crawling.

Chassis

Unlike soft-roading entry-level adventure machines, the F 450 GS is heavily geared toward authentic trail capability. It handles rough terrain using a robust, newly engineered steel perimeter frame mated to a lightweight cast aluminum swingarm.

  • Suspension Duty: It features premium, long-travel 43 mm KYB upside-down front forks alongside a directly linked KYB rear monoshock. Both ends offer 180 mm of wheel travel and are fully adjustable for compression, rebound, and preload.
  • Wheel Setup: It rides on a classic dual-purpose 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheel layout, wrapped in dual-sport tubeless tires to handle harsh rocks and sharp highway expansion joints.
  • Weight Metric: Ready to roll with a 14-litre fuel tank fully topped up, the entire motorcycle tips the scales at a remarkably agile kerb weight of just 178 kg, placing it at a massive power-to-weight advantage against heavier segment rivals.

The GS Trophy package doesn’t hold back on technology, packing software features usually locked away for the heavyweight R 1300 GS flagships. The cockpit is dominated by a large 6.5-inch high-definition TFT display managed by BMW’s iconic handlebar-mounted multi-controller wheel. The electronics suite includes a multi-stage Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), ABS Pro (Cornering ABS), Engine Drag Torque Control (MSR), Wheelie Control, and a dedicated Riding Modes Pro package that unlocks four distinct mapping presets: Rain, Road, Enduro, and a highly customizable Enduro Pro mode that completely deletes rear-wheel ABS for pure dirt drifting.

Visually, the Malaysian-spec GS Trophy variant is finished in the striking GS Trophy Racing Blue Metallic livery. It arrives completely decked out with high-end adventure hardware as standard, including white-hued handguards, an aluminum belly pan engine guard, heavy-duty off-road footpegs with removable rubber inserts, a tinted Rallye sport windscreen, a USB-C charging hub, and a height-adjustable rear brake pedal.

Motor Mitra Verdict

The Malaysian rollout of the BMW F 450 GS gives us a very clear indicator of what to expect when this premium machine officially debuts on Indian shores. While a direct currency conversion places the Malaysian price tag past the ₹9 Lakh mark due to high local import tax structures, its local manufacturing at the Hosur plant means BMW Motorrad India will be able to price it aggressively for domestic buyers. When it hits the Indian market later this year, it is highly expected to carry an introductory price tag hovering around the ₹4.70 Lakh to ₹5.20 Lakh (ex-showroom) window. By bringing a sophisticated twin-cylinder motor, standard clutchless shifting tech, and a heavy-duty adjustable chassis to the table, the F 450 GS is fully armed to completely shake up the entry-premium ADV segment.
