The latest domestic sales report for May 2026 reveals a complex, mixed-bag performance for the European sibling brands under the Skoda-Volkswagen umbrella in India. While both manufacturers experienced a drop in total year-on-year (YoY) and month-on-month (MoM) wholesale volumes, the data clearly underscores a massive shifting trend: SUVs are aggressively anchoring the group’s business, while traditional sedans face structural headwinds.
Here is the deep-dive analysis of how the individual models performed in May 2026 across both stables.
Skoda: Massive Dependence on SUVs
Skoda Auto India reported total domestic sales of 5,760 units in May 2026. This represents a 15% decline compared to the 6,740 units sold in May 2025, and a 16% drop sequentially from April 2026 (6,886 units).
The headline story for Skoda is their structural shift in volume—the newly introduced Kylaq compact SUV and the recently facelifted Kushaq midsize SUV together accounted for 4,753 units, which represents over 82% of the brand’s entire monthly business.
Model-Wise Breakup
| Model | Units Sold (May 2026) | YoY Growth | MoM Growth | Performance Analysis |
| Skoda Kylaq | 3,443 | -30% | -16% | Despite the double-digit slide, the sub-4m compact SUV remains Skoda’s absolute volume king, single-handedly accounting for nearly 60% of total brand sales. |
| Skoda Kushaq | 1,310 | +103% | -29% | The star performer of the month. Following its recent mid-life facelift, Kushaq more than doubled its volumes compared to May 2025. It brought in 22.7% of total sales, though sequential monthly demand slowed. |
| Skoda Slavia | 861 | -8% | +4% | While it faced a slight yearly contraction, the turbo-petrol sedan bucked the downward market trend for sedans by showing a steady, positive sequential month-on-month recovery. |
| Skoda Kodiaq | 146 | -30% | +26% | The premium flagship luxury 7-seater saw a yearly drop, but registered a solid 26% sequential surge over April. Notably, Skoda is building on this momentum by opening bookings for the performance-oriented Kodiaq RS on June 22. |
The Taigun Facelift Holds the Line

Volkswagen India registered a relatively tight total wholesale tally of 2,619 units in May 2026. This marks a modest 8% decline over May 2025 (2,848 units) and a sequential contraction of 7.4% compared to April 2026 (2,828 units).
Mirroring Skoda’s numbers, the core India 2.0 portfolio—specifically the Taigun and the Virtus—drives the brand, locking down over 96% of Volkswagen’s total domestic volume.
Model-Wise Breakup
- Volkswagen Taigun (1,281 Units | +13.8% YoY): The recently launched Taigun Facelift—boasting extensive feature additions and an efficiency-boosted 1.0L TSI powertrain—has proven to be an absolute lifeline. It grew nearly 14% year-on-year, contributing roughly 49% of VW’s total volume. Combined with April’s numbers, more than half of the Taigun’s total 2026 sales have come in the last 60 days alone.
- Volkswagen Virtus (1,238 Units | -27.5% YoY): While the Virtus remains highly favored among driving enthusiasts, it took a notable beating compared to May 2025, falling by over 27% as a major segment of premium buyers continues to shift into high-riding crossovers.
- Niche Portfolio (Tayron & Tiguan): At the premium, low-volume end, the imported CBU-route Tayron R-Line added 51 units to the monthly board, closely followed by the Tiguan at 49 units. The performance-spec Golf GTI registered zero dispatches for the month.
The May 2026 performance shows that the European alliance is operating in a consolidation phase. Skoda is leaning heavily on the volume shoulders of the Kylaq, whereas Volkswagen’s recent injection of updates into the Taigun Facelift is yielding much-needed defensive growth.
While sedans like the Slavia and Virtus still command a loyal, driving-focused audience, the structural message from Indian car buyers is loud and clear: SUVs are non-negotiable for long-term survival. To counter this, both brands are looking toward highly localized expansions, including the upcoming sub-4-metre Volkswagen SUV (reportedly named the Tera) and high-performance flagship additions like the Kodiaq RS to drive premium enthusiasm back into showrooms.
