Tata Motors delivered a strong performance in August 2026, with its domestic passenger-vehicle sales reaching 65,253 units, marking a sharp 59.15% increase over the 41,001 units sold in August 2025. The company also recorded 4.22% month-on-month growth compared with July 2026, making August its strongest domestic passenger-vehicle sales month of the financial year so far.
The biggest headline came from the Tata Punch, which recorded 21,320 units and emerged as India’s best-selling car for the month. The Nexon followed with 18,431 units, while the Tiago also posted impressive year-on-year growth. Sierra, Harrier, Safari, Curvv and Tigor also contributed to Tata’s overall performance, although Altroz was among the models to record a yearly decline.

Punch Nearly Doubles Sales and Takes the No.1 Spot
The Tata Punch was easily the biggest headline of August. Punch and Punch EV together recorded 21,320 units, compared with 10,704 units during the same month last year. That translates to an impressive 99.18% year-on-year growth, meaning the Punch family nearly doubled its sales volume in just one year and strengthened its position as Tata’s biggest volume contributor.
The Punch also remained remarkably stable compared with July, when 21,313 units were recorded. With only seven additional units sold month-on-month, the compact SUV maintained an exceptionally high volume instead of relying on a temporary sales spike, which makes its performance even more significant.
The result pushed the Punch to the top of India’s overall monthly car-sales chart. Its compact SUV design, multiple powertrain choices and EV availability continue to make it one of Tata’s most important models in the Indian passenger-vehicle market.
Nexon Remains Tata’s Second Big Volume Driver
The Nexon and Nexon EV together registered 18,431 units in August 2026. Compared with 14,004 units in August 2025, the model recorded a healthy 31.61% year-on-year growth, while sales also improved 5.49% over July’s 17,471 units.
With more than 18,000 units sold in a single month, the Nexon remains a crucial part of Tata’s SUV strategy. Together, Punch and Nexon accounted for almost 61% of the reported model-wise volume, highlighting just how heavily these two SUVs contribute to Tata’s overall passenger-vehicle performance.
The strong monthly performance also shows that Nexon continues to maintain momentum despite increasing competition in India’s compact-SUV segment. Its established position, multiple powertrain options and strong market presence continue to support healthy demand.

Tiago Delivers a Major Growth Surprise
The Tiago and Tiago EV combined to record 8,537 units in August. This was a major improvement over the 5,250 units registered during August 2025, resulting in an impressive 62.61% year-on-year growth. The model also gained 14.91% compared with July’s 7,429 units, making Tiago one of Tata’s strongest growth performers during the month.
While Tata’s SUVs dominate the sales headlines, the Tiago continues to provide important volume in the hatchback segment. Its August performance is particularly notable because it shows that Tata’s growth is not coming exclusively from its SUV portfolio.
The strong monthly improvement also gives Tata another positive signal ahead of the festive season. If Tiago maintains this momentum, it can continue to provide a healthy volume contribution alongside the company’s high-selling SUV range.
Sierra Drops Month-on-Month but Remains a Key Tata Model
The Sierra and Sierra EV recorded 5,622 units in August 2026. Since the Sierra was introduced only recently, a conventional year-on-year comparison is not applicable. However, its month-on-month performance provides an interesting picture, with sales declining from 6,327 units in July to 5,622 units in August.
This represents an 11.14% month-on-month fall, making August the Sierra’s lowest monthly sales figure since customer deliveries began in January 2026, according to the reported model-wise data. Despite the decline, the Sierra remained Tata’s fourth-largest contributor in the August breakup.
The monthly drop will be something to watch as Tata enters the festive period. The Sierra has already established itself as an important addition to Tata’s SUV portfolio, so a recovery in the coming months could give the company’s overall sales another boost.

Harrier and Safari Gain Strong Momentum
The Harrier and Harrier EV together recorded 3,577 units, up 15.87% from 3,087 units in August 2025. Sales also increased 8.36% compared with July, showing healthy momentum for Tata’s larger SUV range.
The Safari delivered an even stronger month-on-month performance. Its August sales reached 1,953 units, compared with 1,453 units in July, translating into a substantial 34.41% monthly increase. Safari also recorded 31.16% year-on-year growth over August 2025.
The combination of strong monthly and annual growth makes Safari one of the more positive performers in Tata’s upper-SUV portfolio during August. Together with Harrier, it shows that Tata’s larger SUVs are also gaining momentum rather than relying solely on Punch and Nexon for growth.
Altroz Struggles, While Curvv and Tigor Stay Positive
The Altroz was one of the weaker performers in August when compared with the previous year. Sales stood at 3,047 units, down 23.04% from 3,959 units in August 2025. However, there was a small positive sign on a monthly basis, with sales rising 6.46% from July’s 2,862 units.
The Curvv and Curvv EV together recorded 1,904 units, representing 11.80% year-on-year growth and 12.20% month-on-month growth. The model therefore remained firmly in positive territory on both comparison points, despite operating in a highly competitive SUV segment.
Meanwhile, the Tigor and Tigor EV recorded 862 units. Although it remained the lowest-volume model in the listed breakup, sales were still up 7.08% year-on-year and 13.72% over July, giving the model a modest but positive trend on both comparison points.

What Tata’s August Sales Numbers Reveal
The August figures show that Tata’s sales momentum is being driven primarily by its SUV portfolio. Punch and Nexon remain the clear volume leaders, while Tiago is showing renewed strength and Sierra has quickly established itself as a significant contributor despite its recent monthly decline.
Tata’s growing EV portfolio is another important factor. Several major nameplates now have electric versions, allowing the company to offer customers different powertrain choices while retaining familiar model identities. Tata’s combined EV sales also reached a record 16,549 units across domestic and international markets in August, highlighting the increasing importance of electric models to the company’s passenger-vehicle business.
The main areas to watch are the Sierra’s recovery and Altroz’s year-on-year decline. If Sierra regains its monthly momentum and Altroz improves during the festive period, Tata’s overall passenger-vehicle performance could become even stronger.
Punch Leads, But Tata Has More Than One Winner
August 2026 was a particularly strong month for Tata Motors’ passenger-vehicle business. Domestic sales reached 65,253 units, up 59.15% year-on-year, while the Punch emerged as India’s best-selling car with 21,320 units. The Nexon remained Tata’s second-biggest volume contributor at 18,431 units, while Tiago delivered an impressive 62.61% annual growth.
Safari, Harrier and Curvv also posted positive momentum, giving Tata a broader base of models contributing to its strong monthly performance. At the same time, the decline in Altroz and Sierra’s month-on-month fall show that not every model is moving in the same direction.
The biggest takeaway is clear: Punch is currently Tata’s sales champion, Nexon remains the brand’s second major volume engine, and Sierra has quickly become an important addition to the SUV portfolio. With the festive season ahead, Tata’s next sales report could make the competition even more interesting.
