New Delhi: MG Motor is preparing to expand its electrified portfolio in India, and the upcoming MG Starlight 560 has now been spotted testing on Indian roads for the first time. The camouflaged test mule was seen near the company’s Halol facility in Gujarat, indicating that local validation trials are underway ahead of a likely 2026 launch. The sighting confirms that MG is serious about introducing a new-generation electrified SUV tailored for the Indian market.

Despite heavy camouflage, the proportions of the MG Starlight 560 are clearly visible. The SUV appears larger and more upright than many midsize offerings currently on sale. It carries a squared-off stance with a wide body, relatively flat bonnet and tall greenhouse, hinting at strong road presence and practicality. Slim headlamp signatures and a broad front fascia can be seen beneath the wraps, suggesting a modern lighting setup. The rear section appears equally substantial, likely featuring connected LED tail lamps in line with current global design trends.

The most significant aspect of the MG Starlight 560, however, lies under the skin. The model is expected to be offered with electrified powertrains, including a plug-in hybrid variant and potentially a fully electric version. The plug-in hybrid configuration is anticipated to combine a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and a battery pack capable of delivering a usable electric-only range. Overseas specifications of similar configurations indicate a combined power output close to 200 horsepower, which would place it comfortably among strong-performing SUVs in the segment. An electric-only range of around 80 to 100 kilometres could make it especially appealing for urban users who wish to drive daily without consuming petrol.

In addition to the plug-in hybrid, MG is also believed to be evaluating a pure electric variant of the MG Starlight 560 for India. International versions are said to feature battery packs in the 50 to 60 kWh range, delivering a claimed driving range exceeding 500 kilometres under ideal testing conditions. If introduced with competitive pricing and local assembly, such a configuration could rival established electric SUVs in the Indian market.

The arrival of the MG Starlight 560 would mark a significant shift in MG’s India strategy. The brand has already built a reputation in the electric vehicle space with models such as the MG ZS EV and the MG Comet EV, but a larger electrified SUV would allow it to compete directly in the high-volume midsize and three-row SUV segments. The hybrid version, in particular, could serve as a bridge between conventional petrol SUVs and full EVs, offering customers the flexibility of electric commuting along with the reassurance of a combustion engine for long-distance travel.

From a market positioning perspective, the MG Starlight 560 is expected to compete with established players such as the Toyota Fortuner, MG Gloster and Skoda Kodiaq, depending on final dimensions and pricing. However, unlike traditional ladder-frame rivals, the MG offering is likely to focus more on urban refinement, advanced technology and electrified efficiency rather than hardcore off-road capability.

The timing of the spy sighting is notable, as manufacturers across India are accelerating electrification plans in response to tightening emission norms and changing consumer preferences. Hybrid technology, especially plug-in hybrids, is still relatively rare in India’s mass-market SUV segment. If MG succeeds in localising production and keeping costs under control, the MG Starlight 5600 could introduce plug-in hybrid capability to a wider audience.

Although official technical specifications and launch timelines have not yet been confirmed by MG Motor, industry estimates suggest a possible debut toward the end of 2026. The commencement of road testing indicates that development is progressing steadily. Over the coming months, more details regarding features, battery capacity, charging times and interior technology are expected to emerge.

The MG Starlight 560 represents more than just another SUV launch; it signals MG’s intention to strengthen its position in India’s rapidly evolving electrified vehicle space. If priced strategically and supported by robust after-sales infrastructure, it could become a key player in the next phase of India’s SUV transformation.
