JSW MG Motor India Launches The Majestor: A Loaded, Hardcore Gamble For Segment Dominance
For years, the premium ladder-frame SUV segment in India has been a masterclass in monopoly. Everyone knows the undisputed heavyweight champ, and every time a new contender steps into the ring, it usually ends up bruised, battered, and relegated to the margins. JSW MG Motor India, however, isn’t pulling any punches. With the launch of the all-new MG Majestor, priced at an introductory Rs. 40.99 lakh to Rs. 44.99 lakh (ex-showroom), the brand has officially sent its new flagship to replace the aging Gloster.

This isn’t a mere cosmetic facelift; it is an aggressive, tech-heavy, and mechanically serious attempt to disrupt the status quo. The question is: does the Majestor have the sheer grit to shake up the segment benchmarks, or is it just another feature-loaded soft-roader playing dress-up?
If an SUV’s primary job description in India is to clear traffic by simply appearing in a rearview mirror, the Majestor passes with flying colors. Measuring over five meters in length and standing as the tallest and widest vehicle in its class, its dimensions alone guarantee attention.

MG has swapped out the older Gloster’s chrome-heavy, conservative front end for a far more menacing ‘mosaic matrix’ octagonal grille finished in gloss black. It adopts the modern, trending split-headlamp configuration—sweptback, T-shaped LED daytime running lights sit high up up-front, while the main tri-beam LED projectors are stacked vertically inside a sculpted bumper.
The silhouette remains cleanly identifiable, but it now rides on sharper 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in chunky all-terrain rubber. Around the back, a massive connected LED lightbar dominates the tailgate, underscored by prominent, blocky “MAJESTOR” badging and a sporty dual-exhaust tip design. It looks less like an MPV-turned-SUV and much more like a cohesive, rugged, high-end off-roader.
Pop the massive hood, and you are greeted by a familiar powerhouse. The Majestor retains the 2.0-litre twin-turbocharged diesel engine, delivering a healthy 215 hp of peak power and an impressive 479 Nm of torque. This remains the only twin-turbo diesel setup available in this specific segment, and it is paired exclusively with an 8-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.

On the open highway, this engine is an absolute gem. It breathes easily at high speeds, and once it builds momentum, the Majestor stretches its legs like a true, effortless cruiser. Long family road trips are exactly where this powertrain will shine.
However, it isn’t a flawless urban operator. Drop below 2,000 rpm in bumper-to-bumper city traffic, and a distinct touch of turbo lag reveals itself. The 8-speed gearbox, while smooth when you’re taking it easy, can feel slightly hesitant and relaxed when you suddenly demand a quick downshift for a rapid overtaking maneuver. It is built for a composed, authoritative driving style rather than frantic, stop-and-go sprint sessions.
While the Gloster was always perceived as a plush, highway-centric soft-roader, MG has gone out of its way to inject serious old-school 4×4 DNA into the Majestor. The 4WD variants don’t just offer electronic terrain modes; they now come equipped with triple differential locks (front, center, and rear) alongside a segment-first M-Crawl system.
The crawl system functions as an off-road cruise control, managing the throttle and braking over treacherous obstacles automatically, allowing the driver to focus solely on steering inputs. Combined with 10 distinct terrain and drive mode configurations and a massive 810mm water-wading depth, the Majestor transforms into an incredibly capable mountain goat on rocky, muddy, or sandy trails. It is rare to see a manufacturer back up rugged styling with such authentic, hardcore mechanical hardware under the skin.
Step inside, and the cabin feels entirely disconnected from the rough-and-tumble exterior. MG has abandoned the older tan layout for a sophisticated, all-black “smoked ebony” interior layout featuring extensive use of premium leather and soft-touch plastics.
The dashboard is dominated by a clean, modern dual 12.3-inch screen setup—one for the highly customizable driver’s instrument cluster and another for the snappy infotainment system. Thankfully, MG has chosen to retain physical toggle switches for the three-zone climate control, which are tactile and exceptionally easy to use while driving.

Comfort is where the Majestor truly bullies its immediate rivals. Available in both 6-seat (captain chairs) and 7-seat (bench) configurations, the interior is incredibly spacious. If you opt for the 6-seater, the second-row captain chairs slide, recline, and offer an immensely relaxed seating posture.
Up front, the driver gets a 12-way power-adjustable seat with memory, and both front occupants are treated to heated, ventilated, and 8-mode massage functions. Add to that a massive panoramic sunroof, a crisp 12-speaker JBL audio system, and a comprehensive Level 2 ADAS safety suite, and the cabin easily matches the luxury levels of SUVs from a segment above.
On the flip side, the body-on-frame platform means the floor remains relatively high, slightly impacting under-thigh support for very tall passengers in the rear rows. Additionally, the omission of second-row seat ventilation and built-in rear sunblinds feels like a missed opportunity in an otherwise flawless feature checklist.
JSW MG Motor India has played a clever hand with the Majestor. By packaging standard-setting luxury features, modern Level 2 driver assistance tech, and authentic, hardcore off-roading hardware into a vehicle that undercuts its primary competition by a significant financial margin, they have created an undeniably compelling value proposition.
It may not offer the sharp, sporty driving dynamics of a monocoque crossover, nor does it possess the decades-old cult status of its primary Japanese rival. But for the discerning premium buyer who demands massive road presence, an absolute fortress of safety, luxury-lounge comfort, and genuine go-anywhere capability, the MG Majestor stands tall as a phenomenally complete package.
