The entry-level cruiser motorcycle landscape in India has historically been dominated by a singular moniker. While premium buyers have a rich variety of high-capacity retro machines, budget-conscious daily commuters seeking comfort have consistently turned to Pune-based legacy manufacturer Bajaj Auto. Shaking up its cruiser line-up to address evolving urban riding dynamics, Bajaj Auto has officially launched the 2026 Avenger Street 220 in India at an aggressive ex-showroom price of Rs 1.30 lakh (Rs 1,30,663).
This sudden product intervention is highly strategic. Instead of expanding the portfolio horizontally, Bajaj has rationalized its line-up by discontinuing the lower-capacity Avenger Street 160. By doing so, the brand has shifted its focus to offering higher displacement grunt at an accessible price bracket, making the updated 220cc platform the definitive benchmark for daily highway and city commutes.
The New Dynamics: Street vs Cruise (Avenger Street 220)
With the elimination of the 160cc street configuration, Bajaj’s cruiser family has been streamlined to just two standalone variations of the 220cc platform. Interestingly, Bajaj has chosen a highly aggressive pricing model that subtly shifts the hierarchy within the brand.

| THE 220cc BAJAJ CRUISER DUO |
+-----------------------------------------------------+
| Bajaj Avenger Cruise 220: Rs 1.29 Lakh (Classic Chrome) |
| Bajaj Avenger Street 220: Rs 1.30 Lakh (Stealth Dark Theme)|

The blacked-out Avenger Street 220 sits marginally higher than the chrome-laden Avenger Cruise 220, which retails at Rs 1.29 lakh (ex-showroom). This price premium highlights the urban appeal and modified ergonomics that the Street variant brings to the tarmac.

Dark-Out Theme (Avenger Street 220)
Visually, the Avenger Street 220 steps completely away from the old-school retro design of its Cruise twin, targeting a much younger, lifestyle-oriented demographic.
The extensive chrome garnishing seen on the front forks, exhaust heat shields, and rear grab rails has been swapped for a stealthy, satin-finished blacked-out theme. The tall highway-cruising windshield has been removed in favor of a short, aerodynamically stubby front visor. Furthermore, the bulky pillion backrest has been dropped to maintain a sleek, clean, bobber-like tail profile.
The design is completed with lightweight multi-spoke alloy wheels replacing the traditional wire-spokes, making it compatible with tubeless rubber for hassle-free flat repairs. For paint jobs, buyers can pick between two high-contrast color choices: Ebony Black and Cocktail Wine Red.
Revised Ergonomics
Cruisers are traditionally loved for long straights, but handling them in bumper-to-bumper city congestion can be tedious. Bajaj has resolved this by re-engineering the handlebar layout.
The Street 220 discards the tall, sweeping pulled-back bars of the Cruise model, substituting them with a flatter, lower handlebar setup. This changes the rider’s triangle completely, giving a street-oriented, active, and commanding riding posture that allows fast directional changes in tight traffic.
Crucially, it retains its signature ultra-low seat height of just 737 mm. This makes it accessible for shorter riders, allowing them to firmly place both feet flat on the ground at stoplights. Combined with a featherlight kerb weight of 160 kg—significantly lighter than 350cc retro motorcycles—the Street 220 is remarkably easy to manage.
The Bulletproof DTS-i Motor (Avenger Street 220)
Beneath the matte-black body panels sits Bajaj’s time-tested mechanical workhorse. The Street 220 is driven by the exact same 220cc single-cylinder, air-and-oil-cooled, Fuel-Injected engine that powers the Cruise variant.
| Parameter | Specification Metric |
| Engine Displacement | 220cc (Single Cylinder, SOHC) |
| Cooling Technology | Air / Oil-Cooled |
| Max Power Output | 19 BHP @ 8,500 rpm |
| Peak Torque Output | 17.55 Nm @ 7,000 rpm |
| Transmission | 5-speed Manual Gearbox |
| Expected Mileage | ~40 kmpl |
Equipped with patented Digital Twin Spark Ignition (DTS-i) tech, the motor kicks out a healthy 19 BHP of power and 17.55 Nm of peak torque. The torque is spread evenly across the lower rev-range, allowing the rider to easily pull away from speeds as low as 30 km/h in top gear without any engine knocking or frequent gear changes. Power is managed via a crisp 5-speed manual transmission, pulling fuel from a robust 13-liter fuel tank.
To maintain its competitive pricing structure, the Avenger Street 220 utilizes a reliable, conventional hardware arrangement. The front end is supported by telescopic forks wrapped in rubber gaiters, while the rear uses twin shock absorbers.

| BRAKING & SAFETY NETWORK |
+-----------------------------------------------------+
| Front Braking: Large Diameter Hydraulic Disc | | Rear Braking : Conventional Mechanical Drum | |=====> Safety Intervention: Single-Channel ABS Standard |
+-----------------------------------------------------+
Braking duties are split between a ventilated disc brake at the front and a drum setup at the rear. To comply with safety regulations and prevent front-wheel lockups under sudden braking on slick Indian roads, a Single-Channel ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) is standard.
Market Positioning
At Rs 1.30 lakh, Bajaj has fired a warning shot across the bow of the retro commuter segment. By replacing the underpowered Street 160 with this full-blooded 220cc iteration, Bajaj has dramatically increased the value proposition for the daily cruiser buyer.
The Avenger Street 220 stands practically unrivaled in its precise price tier, undercutting larger premium retro roadsters like the Royal Enfield Hunter 350 and TVS Ronin while offering a dedicated cruiser aesthetic. Backed by affordable spare parts, an incredibly low seat height, and a dark-themed street profile, the new Avenger Street 220 is poised to dominate urban spaces once again.
